This course aims to provide a comprehensive overview of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). The course will begin by introducing CBDCs and exploring their history and evolution. It will then delve into the motivations behind central banks issuing CBDCs, including financial inclusion, payment system efficiency, and macroeconomic stabilization. The course will also cover different deployment models for CBDCs, including central bank-issued, decentralized, and hybrid models.

Technical considerations for CBDC design, such as digital currency infrastructure and legal and regulatory frameworks, will be examined. The course will also explore various use cases for CBDCs, including cross-border payments, financial inclusion, digital identity, and supply chain management.

The course will delve into the implementation and deployment of CBDCs.  Including a review of case studies of CBDC projects and pilots and the technical considerations involved in implementation. It will also cover the legal and regulatory frameworks surrounding CBDCs. This includes the review of international standards and guidelines and considerations for consumer protection, money laundering, and financial stability.

The ethical and social implications of CBDCs will be addressed, including the impact on privacy, financial intermediaries, and financial stability. The course will also explore ongoing research and experimentation with CBDCs and potential future directions for CBDC development and adoption. Finally, the course will consider the impact of CBDCs on the traditional financial system and potential implications for monetary policy and financial stability, as well as ethical and societal considerations.
